Lowell Firefighters Union backs Eileen Donoghue in State Senate race

MAY 27, 2010

LOWELL – Lowell Firefighters Local 853 this week unanimously endorsed Eileen Donoghue in the race for state senate, with the nearly 200 members calling her the candidate best suited to lead the First Middlesex District on Beacon Hill. “When she was on the city council and as serving as mayor, Eileen always worked closely with us to ensure the public’s safety was protected with the limited resources available,” said David Keene, president of Local 853. “She understands what communities need and never backed down from a difficult situation. For us, this was an easy choice.” For part of her tenure as mayor, Donoghue served as chairperson of the public safety committee and oversaw several tough budget cycles during her two terms as mayor and 12 years on the council. “Protecting the public is a cornerstone to building a strong community,” Donoghue said. “I have always and will always fight to make sure our first responders have the resources and the leadership support they need to protect the public.” The firefighter’s endorsement comes on top of endorsements Eileen has already received from Lowell Mayor Jim Milinazzo, former Mayor Bill Martin, City Councilor Kevin Broderick, and Tyngsboro Selectwoman Elizabeth Coughlin.
