Crowd of supporters join Eileen Donoghue for Senate campaign announcement

MAY 27, 2010

LOWELL – Former Lowell Mayor Eileen Donoghue formally announced her candidacy for the state Senate today, launching a campaign built on her strong leadership skills and experience as a longtime local elected official who helped steward some of the city’s greatest economic development projects of the last two decades. Joined by nearly 150 friends, family and volunteers at a downtown restaurant, Donoghue pledged to carry on the strong tradition the First Middlesex District has enjoyed of aggressive pursuit of the district’s priorities. “We owe it to this district to continue the tradition of strong leadership, particularly during these challenging and uncertain economic times,” Donoghue said. “During the next several years, it’s going to be more important than ever that we are doing everything we can to create new jobs – and lots of them – and retain the ones we have. Job growth must be our number one priority.” Donoghue and her scores of volunteers have been collecting the necessary signatures to qualify for the ballot and plan several local events during the next several weeks to continue the momentum. Information on those events will be forthcoming on Donoghue’s campaign website: “I got in to public service to make a difference, and the response that I’ve gotten from people across the district has been overwhelming,” Donoghue said. “In times like these, we need someone to serve who can manage our resources and knows the things that our government must do. We need someone who understands how government works and will approach problems and issues with common sense, and that’s what I will be.”
